Why Do People Smoke?

The simplest answer to the question of why people smoke is this: "Advertising".

From a young age we are constantly bombarded with images of handsome, beautiful and sexy people hanging out having a smoke. These individuals are always super cool, even suave, and exemplify how we too can be cool if we just pick up a cigarette.

Why are we are never shown the images of middle aged smokers, complete with yellow smoke stained teeth, hanging out having a beer and chain smoking multiple packs a day? Because that simply dosen't sell cigarettes. It may be reality, but reality dosn't hook the next generation of smokers, and thats always the goal, hook the next generation.

When I was younger images of James Dean, Frank Sinatra, the Marlboro Man or even Joe Camel happily puffing away on a cigarette were placed before me. I quickly learned to relate smoking with the personas of these individuals. Then I decided to mimic the actions of these individuals so that I too could be cool, even though some of these individuals who I wished to copy were fictional characters!

I can hardly believe that I smoked over a pack a day for nearly 15 years so that I could be as cool as Cartoon Character Joe Camel, but I did.

Why Should I Quit Smoking?

Their are several very significant reasons why a person should quit smoking, Including the following:

1) The Financial Costs

The average price for a package of cigarettes in the United States is just under $4.00 a pack. In Canada it is quickly climbing towards an average of $8.00 a pack.

So the cost of just one pack a day for an American Smoker is about $120 a month, and $1440 a year. For a Canadian smoker the cost is approximately double. But the truth is that most smokers indulge in over a pack a day, averaging out around a pack and a half in a twenty-four hour period. This means that the average American smoker is spending about $2200 a year on tobacco, and a Canadian smoker is spending nearly double that!

This is the cost of just the cigarettes being smoked. It does not include any additional expenses, such as added health care costs, that a person will be more likely to have because of smoking related illnesses.

2) The Physical Costs

Now that we know that smoking is taking away a huge chunk of your money, lets examine what its doing to your physical well-being.

We have all seen the pictures of black lungs, rotting teeth and wrinkled leathery skin that you get from smoking. I don't have anything to add to this. I do not have further pictures or horror stories to try to scare you into quitting. The evidence is already out there, smoking ages you and makes you ugly. Simple. What more can I possibly add here?

The question I have for you then is this: "Is It Worth It?" -- NO! There I will answer it for you.

One more question, "Would you rather look young and beautiful?"

3) Peer Pressure - "Everyone else is doing it."

Many of us started smoking because of peer pressure and the desire to be seen as cool. We saw advertisements and images of smokers who were sexy, hip, and cool. We wanted to be those people. Well lucky for us the tide of peer pressure has swung. Now if you want to be cool, sexy and hip all you need to do is quit smoking.

More and More the trendy spots to go like the bars, the nightclubs and the lounges are going smoke free. Many cities across North America are now entirely smoke free, which forces anyone who does want to light up and have a smoke to either do so in the confines of their own home or else they are forced to hide somewhere like an alley and sneak a quick puff like some kind of drug fiend.

So do you want to be cool? Then follow the crowd and put out that cigarette.

The Truth You Already Know

If you are reading this article, then you are looking for a way to quit smoking. And if you have read this far into it then you are pretty dedicated to the idea of quitting. We have all seen the statistics about the death rate and increased likelihood of getting sick from a smoking related disease. Maybe these statistics have finally convinced you that you need to quit, or maybe you want to quit for another reason. It Doesn't matter what it is that is driving you to quit, the only thing that matters is that you act on it and that you act on it NOW!

There is no better time to quit smoking than now. It will simply be the best choice you ever make.
